Hagood Mill

Search Pickens South Carolina

By 1819, Benjamin Hagood was operating the first Hagood grist mill. A grist mill uses the power of water to grind grains into meal, flour and feed. The first mill is gone, but probably was located about one and a half miles from the present mill.

James Hagood, the son of Benjamin, built the present Hagood Mill in 1826. This mill remained in operation until its closing in1960. The mill was given to the Pickens County Historical Society in 1972, and was then added to the National Historic Register.

The mill was reconstructed in the early 1970s and the water wheel contains as much of the original wheel as was possible. Inside, much of the original milling mechanism remains. The mill is presently open and operating the third Saturday of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
