St. Matthews is located in
Calhoun County between
Orangeburg and Wateree along Highway 601 near
Lake Marion. St Matthews is the county seat of
Calhoun County and is situated south of
Columbia in central South Carolina.
St. Matthews dates back to when the railroad reached "Lewisville" depot in 1841. The railroad cut through the middle of the town was dug out with picks and shovels. The nearby town of Cameron was laid out in 1894 when a second railroad came through the area.
