Orangeburg is located in Orangeburg County, of which it is the county seat. The city is situated south of Columbia between Bamberg and St. Matthews along Highway 301 near the North Fork Edisto River. Lake Marion is located just east.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 12,733, a decrease of 1,039 since 1990.
Orangeburg, named for William, the Prince of Orange, the son-in-law of King George, II, of England, was first settled in 1704 by an Indian trader, George Sterling.
