Swan Lake Iris Gardens |
Iris Gardens is renowned for its fantastic array of Japanese Irises or Kaempferi Iris. In the 150 acre expanse of gardens, 25 varieties blossom in an incredible rainbow of color. Most of the approximately 120 acres of gardens south of the street were donated in 1938 by A.T. Heath Sr. Mr. Heath deeded the land to the city of Sumter. It became known as the Heath Garden.
Today, an open air pavilion houses a concession stand and rest rooms. The concession stand sells food for the swans, as well as snacks and drinks for visitors. At the end of the parking lot there is a playground with an old fire engine. Paths, a playground, tennis courts, boardwalks and a recreation area with picnic tables have been added to the park. The irises bloom yearly starting in mid-May and last through June. The blossoms usually peak during the last week of May. The garden boasts many other floral attractions, besides the irises. Colorful Camellias and Azaleas are represented.
