Walterboro is located in Colleton County west of Charleston between Hampton and Summerville along United States Highway 17 near the source of the Ashepoo River.

In 1817, the City of Walterboro became the county seat and was officially incorporated in 1826. The town is situated 32 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Walterboro is the only urban area within Colleton County. Walterboro is located at the junction of United States Highways 15 and 17A, and South Carolina Highways 63, 64 and 303. Interstate 95, the principal north-south corridor for the eastern coast of the United States, is located just to the west of the City limits.

Walterboro is home to one golf course and several tennis facilities. Visitors and guests of the town may enjoy many outdoor activities as well as a moderate climate.
