Gettysburg is located in Potter County (of which it is the county seat) north of Pierre between Selby and Onida on US 212 off US 83 near the Missouri River and Lake Oahe, in Great Lakes Region.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,318, a decrease of 192 since 1990.
