This area is one of the
Black Hills's largest natural exposures of 120-million-year-old petrified wood; visitors to the site will see actual trees of stone during one of the best lessons available on Black Hills geology. The self-guiding tour includes an interpretive animated videotape describing wood petrification, digital audio and graphic museum displays, and a walk along a five-block trail which passes ancient logs ranging in size up to 100 feet long and three feet thick, with the added bonus of an unforgettable view of the area.
