With nearly a half million residents, Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland, located one hour (via train)from Glasgow. Over 16,000 of the city buildings are listed as historical landmarks or are architecturally important. Edinburgh is home to Edinburgh Castle and is still the headquarters for the army's Scottish Division. Popular attractions include the 12th-century St. Margaret's Chapel within Edinburgh Castle, Gladstone's Land, Writers Museum, 15th-century St. Giles Cathedral, Parliament House, Mercat Cross and the Museum of Childhood. John Knox's House, home to the leader of the Scottish Reformation, is also a famous landmark in the city. Another attraction, The Palace of Holyroodhouse dates from 1671 and is the official Scottish residence of the British royal family. Views of the city can be seen atop Arthur's Seat a 240m rocky peak SE of the city. Edinburgh is the county seat of Midlothian.
