Lanark is the county town of
Lanarkshire, located on high ground half a mile above the right bank of the
Clyde, and close to the famous falls. It is 31 miles SE of
Glasgow. The district is associated with William Wallace. New Lanark, 1.5 miles SW of Lanark, is the site of the cotton mill founded in 1785 by Dale and Arkwright, where Robert Owen was long manager and experimented with social and industrial reforms.
