Lanarkshire is an inland county of south central Scotland, embracing the valley of the
Clyde, bounded on the north by
Stirlingshire and
West Lothian, on the east by
Midlothian and
Peeblesshire, on the south by
Dumfriesshire and on the west by
Ayrshire and
Renfrewshire. The area is 879 square miles.
The broad Clyde Valley rises to moorlands on the east and west. The southern part of the county is hilly, with Tinto Hill the loftiest height at 2335 feet. Lanarkshire is the most populous of Scottish counties. Lanark is the county town.
Besides prehistoric and Roman remains, Lanarkshire contains the castles of Bothwell, Douglas, and Craignethan, the priories of Blantyre and Lesmahagow, and the battlefields of Blantyre, Drumclog, and Bothwell Brig.
