Selkirkshire is a county of Scotland in the southern uplands, bounded on the west and north by
Peeblesshire, on the north by
Midlothian, east and southeast by
Roxburghshire, and southwest by
Dumfriesshire. The area is 267 square miles.
It is principally a pastoral region, with great rounded hills, the highest points lying along the western and southwestern borders. The region is drained by the Tweed and its tributaries, chief of which are the Ettrick and the Yarrow. St Mary's Loch is chief among a number of lakes.
The only burghs are Selkirk, the capital, and Galashiels, on the Tweed.
