This is the art museum of the
University of Texas at Austin, recognized as one of the leading university art museums in the country. On display are the 375 paintings which comprise the Mari and James A Michener collection, as well as an important collection of 19th-century North American art. The Blanton's small, but excellent, collection of ancient art features superb Roman portrait sculpture, Greek and Corinthian black- and red-figure and South Italian vases. Highlighting the ancient work is the William J Battle collection of 80 19th-century plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculpture, one of the few such collections in the country. The museum's permanent collection of over 11,500 prints and drawings are shown in exhibitions on the Art Building mezzanine.
