An officers quarters reconstructed on Post Hill marks location of fort that commanded a wide view. A number of foundations still show some sites of the 23 buildings that included barracks, storehouses, stables, guardhouse and hospital. Primarily a cavalry post. Last post for Robert E. Lee before he refused his Union command at the start of the Civil War. Briefly activated for that war, the fort was abandoned in 1869. The reconstructed building is on its original foundation.
