UTEP is located on the US-Mexico border in
El Paso. The campus is located in the foothills of the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, just a few hundred yards from the
Rio Grande and Mexico. Campus architecture is beautifully derived from temples in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, the only examples of ancient architecture in the Western Hemisphere.
UTEP was founded in 1913 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, and became a part of the University of Texas System in 1919. In 1949, the name was changed to Texas Western College which remained until 1967 when the name changed again to the University of Texas at El Paso.
Campus tours are available by contacting the admissions office. The university is part of the University of Texas System.
