W.J. McDonald Observatory

Located 17 miles nortwest on SR 118, then two miles southeast on Spur 78, is the observatory on 6,802-foot Mounte Locke. Operated by the University of Texas, the observatory has four optical telescopes ranging in diameter from 30 to 107 inches. The W.L. Moody Jr. Visitor Information Center at the base of the mountain offers astronomical exhibits, videotape presentations and a map of a self-guiding walking tour, which includes a close-up view of the 107-inch telescope. Tours and public viewings are available. Closed major holidays.
