Visitors to the estate can see the fifth president's original possessions in the recently re-furnished Monroe home, visit the newly restored service yard rooms and explore the boxwood gardens on the 535-acre working farm. Slave quarters are reconstructed on site, alongside the original smokehouse and plantation office. Resident peacocks, sheep, chickens and cattle provide a glimpse of farm life. Ash Lawn-Highland retains the ambiance of an early 1800s working plantation. Guided tours of the main house, which has several Monroe possessions, are available. Picnicking is available in the boxwood gardens.
