Rugged mountains, rocky outcroppings, sphagnum bogs, waterfalls, coniferous and hardwood forests create one of Virginia's most spellbinding parks. The beginning of the Applachain Trail and Mount Rogers, one of the highest points in Virginia are featured. Broad winged and red shouldered hawks in summer, and wild turkey, ruffled grouse and New England eastern cottontail are commonly seen along roadsides.
