Washington and Lee University

Housed in white colonnaded buildings, it dates from the 1749 founding of Augusta Academy, which became Liberty Hall Academy in 1776. In 1796 the academy was endowed by George Washington and was renamed Washington Academy two years later. General Robert E. Lee was president of the college from the end of the Civil War until his death in 1870, after which the name was changed to Washington and Lee University.
