Founded in 1872, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is Virginia's land-grant institution and the largest establishment of higher learning in the state, with more than 20,000 full-time undergraduates and almost 4000 graduate students. Three quarters of students are from Virginia, but every state is represented in the student body. Intercollegiate sports for both men and women are offered. Fraternities and sororities are active. The most popular majors are psychology, mechanical engineering, and marketing. The admission process is highly competitive.
