The land, originally part of
Mount Vernon, was a wedding present from
George Washington to his foster daughter, Eleanor Park Custis and his nephew Major Lawrence Lewis. Dr. William Thornton, who designed the Georgian mansion, was the first architect of the Capitol. Built in 1805 overlooking the Potomac River, the 19th century period rooms and restored formal formal gardens are open for viewing.
