Christopher Columbus discovered the Virgin Islands on his second voyage to America in 1493. Denmark occupied a settlement on St. Thomas in 1717 and bought St. Croix from France in 1733. In 1917, Denmark sold its territories in the Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million. The British portion of the Virgin Islands has been under their flag since 1672.
The islands lie between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, east of Virgin Islands.
