Newfane is located in
Windham County and it is the county seat. It lies northwest of
Brattleboro off Highway 30; the Connecticut and West Rivers are nearby. The town's first post office was opened in 1811.
The columned County courthouse, matching Congregational Church and town hall, all grouped on a fountained green, are framed by white clapboard houses, including two inns. Newfane also has a museum, library, antique shops, book store and two general stores.
