Townshend is located in Windham County, 19 miles north of Brattleboro along Highway 30 on the banks of the West River near Townshend State Park.

Townshend is the site of Scott Covered Bridge, built in 1870 over the West River. The first Vermont covered bridge to be marked for preservation, it is the longest in the state. Also in Townshend is the most photographed church in the U.S.
