Incorporated in 1883, the town of Cheney was named after Benjamin P. Cheney, chairman of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Located south of Spokane off Interstate 90 in eastern Washington, the town boasts "50 lakes within 50 miles." Cheney is home to Eastern Washington University, which was established in 1881. There is also a Cheney, Kansas. Cheney is part of the Spokane, WA metro area.
