Vashon Island, by its geographic isolation and dependence on ferry access, can be considered one large rural community. The community is sometimes called "Vashon" and sometimes "Vashon Island." It is part of King County, which has determined the street numbering. Washington State Ferries have connections to Tacoma at the south end and Seattle at the north end of the island.
