Cowlitz County leaped into the public spotlight in May, 1980, when
Mount St Helens erupted. The county population is concentrated along the
Interstate 5 corridor. The twin cities of
Kelso and
Longview are the largest in the region.
Woodland is the gateway to the Mount St Helens volcanic areas.
Battle Ground is named for a battle that did not take place.
