The Milwaukee County Zoo is considered among the finest Zoos in the country. It is situated on 200 wooded acres and is home to approximately 2500 animals, representing 300 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. With the opening of the newly renovated Aquatic & Reptile Center, a $25 million renovation and expansion plan was completed. The plan included the renovation of the Stackner Heritager Farm and the Polar Bear, Sea Lion, Aviary and Primates of the World exhibits, as well as the addition of the Peck Welcome Center, Humboldt Penguin exhibit and Apes of Africa building. The Milwaukee County Zoo hosts over 20 special events, including celebrations at Easter, Halloween and the holiday season. The highlight of the year is the finest food festival in Wisconsin; The Journal Sentinel's a la Carte. This feast with the beasts is held in August each year.
