UW Platteville traces its roots back to the Platteville Normal School founded in 1866, and the Wisconsin Mining School, founded in 1908. The two institutions merged in 1959, and became part of the University of Wisconsin System in 1971. Since then, the University has quadrupled in size, becoming a nationally respected comprehensive university known for engineering, education, criminal justice, fine arts, agriculture, technology management and other disciplines.
