Jackson Hole

While geologists speculate that the earth is 5 or 6 billion years old, they believe that the oldest rock formation in Jackson Hole is as old as 3.5 billion years. Near the town of Jackson. The area is defined as the line where the valley meets the base of the Teton Mountain Range, the valley was thought to be as old as the Tetons themselves. Therefore, Jackson Hole continues to sink along the Teton Fault.

Jackson Hole lies just west of the Continental Divide and occupies about 400 square miles. The waters of the Snake River take up part of the valley, making for an impressive view.

Until the early 1800s, American Indians used the valley for hunting during the warm months until the settlers arrived. The first white man to see the area was John Colter, who attempted to trade with the Crow Indians. Soon the region became a major trapping and fur trading area, until the appeal of the area wore off around the mid 1800s.
