Jim Gatchell Museum

The museum contains dioramas of Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, the Wagon Box Fight, the Johnson County Cattle War, and early settlement of the Powder River region. Open throughout the summer, the museum is also known for its extensive collection of cowboys' and ranchers' tools, saddles, spurs, arrowheads, and quill and bead work of the Native Americans who inhabited this region. Many exhibits deal with the personal stories of the owners of the museum over time. Calamity Jane giving a dime to a small child, the bugle that survived the Fetterman Battle, and a special bible read for comfort in a foreign land are all examples of some of the heartfelt exhibits on display here.

During the Living History Days held annually each July, frontier people, like the Lakota Sioux, oldtime cowboys, and gunslingers appear at the town's museum.
