Aledo is located in northwestern Illinois in Mercer County (of which it is the county seat), between Moline and Oquawka at the intersection of Highways 94 and 17. It is about 15 miles east of the Mississippi River.
The town's name was created in 1851 by the drawing of letters out of a hat until a pronounceable word was formed. Among Aledo's attractions is the Essley Noble Museum that includes a one-room schoolhouse and 15,000 items dating from 1827. In addition, Hawthorn Ridge Golf Club is set to take on golfers of all skill levels.
