Fitzwilliam

Fitzwilliam is located in Cheshire County 21 miles southeast of Keene between West Ringe and Richmond along Highway 119 near Rhododendron State Park. A classic New England community down to the viilage green.

A classic New England community with a town common and surrounding 12 homes listed on the National Register for Historic Places.

Originally settled as Monadnock No. 4, one in a line of eight towns settled by Scottish colonists. The town was named for William, fourth Earl of Fitzwilliam and cousin of Governor Wentworth of Massachusetts. An early grantee in Fitzwilliam was Matthew Thorton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Incorporated in 1773, Fitzwilliam claims one of the first granite quarries in New Hampshire.

Fitzwilliam is well known for its plentiful antique shops. Also available nearby is the sport of mountain climbing, and blueberry picking. During the winter, visitors will enjoy cross country skiing and snowmobiling at either East Hill Farm or [windblown]; during the summer visitors can explore Rhododenron State Park, Annett State Forest, [monadnsp] or many nearby ponds, rivers, and lakes.
