Carlton is located in Yamhill County in the heart of Oregon's Wine Regions of Oregon. Situated between McMinnville and Yamhill, along Hwy 47 and the Yamhill River, near the Willamette River.
In 1872 a railroad was built from Portland to St Joe, but the train did not stop between the two stations. As a result, first a flag stop was tried, then a regular stop was made at what is now Carlton. This community was founded by Wilson Carl in 1899 and was incorporated in the same year.
The Carlton Country Christmas in the first week of December and the Carlton Fun Days in the fourth weekend of June are both popular events. Other attractions include: Several antique shops, Wennerberg Park, City Park and Pool, Bald Peak State Park, Nestucca River Recreation Area, Siuslaw National Forest and plenty of wineries.
