Known as Alaska's "Year Round Playground," Big Lake is located in
Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area north of
Anchorage near the
Koyukuk River at the west end of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Big Lake is connected to other lakes in the area by dredged waterways. The 1996 Big Lake wildfire destroyed many trees and buildings in the area.
Big Lake is a recreation area known for snow-machining in the winter. In the summer, it is popular for swimming, camping, boating and fishing. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race passes two miles south of Big Lake.
