The Chugatch (CHEW-gatch) National Forest covers 5,400,000 acres and is second in size only to the Tongass National Forest. It extends along the Gulf of Alaska from Seward to Cape Suckling, including many islands. The area is teeming with wildlife. It includes much of the land bordering Prince William Sound and the northeastern portion of the Kenai Peninsula. The 3,500 miles of coastline include glaciers, saltwater bays and valleys that are habitat to native wildlife. Saltwater fish include salmon, halibut, red snapper and crabs. Many species of whales are resident. Freshwater fish are red salmon, Dolly Varden, char and rainbow trout. Licenses are required. Big game include bears, moose and Dall sheep. Visitors to the forest can also take part in recreational gold panning. Write the Forest Geologist at Chugach National Forest (at the address below) for more information.
