Glennallen is located in Valdez-Cordova Census Area at the western edge of Wrangell-St Elias NP and Preserve. It is the gateway to the Copper River Basin. It is located at the junction of the Richardson Hwy and Glenn Hwy/Tok Cutoff. The name was derived from Major Edwin Glenn and Lt. Henry Allen, both leaders in the early explorations of the Copper River region. There is a large Native population in the area and many small farms.

The Native-owned Ahtna Corp. controls many lands and rivers that are closed to the public for hunting and fishing. he Ahtna Arts and Crafts Fair, a music festival, raft race, parade and salmon bake are featured at the Fourth of July Festival in Glennallen.

Glennallen is one of the few communities in the region that was not built on the site of a Native village.
