Nenana is located in
Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area at the confluence of the
Tanana River and
Nenana River on the
Parks Hwy. The town got its name from an Indian word meaning "a place to camp between the rivers." Nenana is the western-most portion of Tanana Athabascan Indian territory.
The town also is home to the Nenana Ice Classic, the Tripod Raising Festival and the Alaska Come-Back Sled Dog Race. Visitor information is available at a sod roof log cabin.
The Tripod Raising Festival awards a cash prize to the Ice Classic winners who guess the exact minute Spring breakup topples a tripod on the river ice. In addition, the town is home to the Alaska State Railroad Museum.
