Established by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1967, the University had its origin in a downtown extension center that began offering classes from the University of Alabama in 1936. In the mid-1960s, Montgomery civic leaders decided to expand the center into a four-year, degree granting institution, and it changed hands to become AUM's first home. AUM opened its doors to students in 1969. Two years later, the university relocated to a 500-acre campus on the McLemore Plantation tract east of the city.
