Faulkner University received its original charter on June 5th, 1942, as Montgomery Bible School. On September 14th, 1942, the first class began with twenty-three students enrolled in grades nine through twelve and the first year of college. The school existed in a single two-story frame building located on a twenty-six acre campus on Ann Street in Montgomery, Alabama.

On April 19, 1985, the Board of Trustees changed the name of Alabama Christian College to Faulkner University in honor of Dr. James H. Faulkner, Sr.
