UNA traces its origin to LaGrange College, which was established in 1830 by the Methodist Church on the authority of the first college charter to be issued by the new State of Alabama. UNA has evolved into a modern and cosmopolitan institution of higher education. Among other things, it became a State Normal School in 1872, a State Teachers College in 1929, and a University in 1967. In addition, they were among the first coeducational institutions in the US.
Their programs lead to bachelors degrees and masters degrees.
