Founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington, this is an independent, professional and technical institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, agriculture, architecture, business, education, engineering, and health professions. There are 7 undergraduate schools and 5 graduate schools.

The 4500 acre campus is in a rural area, 40 miles east of Montgomery. Including residence halls, there are 150 buildings, many of which are historic.

Fraternities and Sororities are on campus, as well as over 60 clubs and organizations.
