This state park in northwest Arkansas near Mountainburg closed on January 2, 2002 and will not reopen until the end of 2004, at a site nearby. All facilities and hiking trails are closed, including the park's segment of the Ozark Highlands Trail. Lake Fort Smith State Park has long served as the western terminus for the trail, but because of the park's closure, the terminus has been temporarily relocated to nearby Dockery Gap.
The state park is being relocated due to the enlarging of Lake Fort Smith and Lake Shepherd Springs in order to meet increased municipal water demands in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area.
