Designed by Gideon Shryock, the building was begun in 1833 and completed in 1842. When Arkansas became a state in 1836, the building served as the capitol. There are two chambers that were once used by the state legislature and the supreme court. It is considered one of the finest examples of Doric architecture in the South.
Set in the oldest surviving state capitol west of the Mississippi River, the Old State House Museum has been designated a National Historic Landmark, though it is probably best known throughout the country as the scene of President Bill Clinton's 1992 and 1996 election-night celebrations!
