Esquimalt was established by the British Navy for the purpose of securing
Vancouver Island for the Crown. It was named after the Native word for "a place of shoaling waters". Since the Canadian Navy took over in 1910, Esquimalt has boasted a large naval base and dockyard. It also offers several waterfront parks, beach access, good recreation facilities and historic sites. Esquimalt is located on Victoria Harbour, just west of
Victoria.
