Kitimat British Columbia

With a population of over 11,000, Kitimat is a hi-tech centre in the heart of a vast wilderness. It was one of the first "planned" communities in North America, built at the head of Douglas Channel in the 1950's by Alcan. The world's largest aluminum smelter is here, as well as Eurocan Pulp and Paper, and Methanex. All three offer free tours by appointment.

In addition to numerous outdoor adventures (the area boasts an abundance of hiking trails), Kitimat offers a wide array of shopping, restaurants and accommodations. There's also a scenic 18-hole golf course. Kitimat is 58 km south of Terrace.
