Sooke British Columbia |
For hundreds of years this was a thriving settlement of the Coast Salish Indians who were dependent on plentiful supplies of berries, birds, clams and fish. In 1849, European settlers arrived and in 1864 the Leech River gold rush caused a population boom in Sooke. It's a pleasant community with a population of 11,600. Visitors are welcome to fish, enjoy the outdoors and learn about the town's history. There is a fascinating museum that depicts pioneer lifestyles of the 19th century, and some of the best year-round salmon fishing on Vancouver Island can be found here. Also enjoy fishing in the fresh water lakes, or sink crab traps for more good results.
Sooke is west of Victoria on the highway to Port Renfrew.
There are a number of Cities in Metropolitan Victoria BC.
