From mid-March to mid-April, during the height of the gray whale migration from Baja to the Arctic Ocean, there are a number of community events, including guided hikes, tours and lectures by whale researchers. The whales can easily be seen in vast numbers from shore or from tour boats. Cozy motels and resorts welcome visitors. Ucluelet's name derives from an Indian word meaning "the people with the good landing place for canoes."
