Bornem Castle

Kasteel Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde

Search Bornem

Bornem Castle was originally constructed in the 9th century on the banks of the Scheldt River. However, the Scheldt meandered out of its riverbed in 1240, so the castle could no longer serve its intended purpose. In the 16th century, its occupant was Phillips de Marnix, mayor of Antwerp during the turbulent period when Protestants fled north to the Netherlands. Open limited hours.
