The ULB (Universite Libre de Bruxelles) was founded immediately following the establishment of Belgian independence in 1831 -- Brussels was to be the capitol of the new nation-state, but it did not yet have its own university, so a group of civic leaders set out to establish one.
The ULB student body today numbers around 18,000. Most of the facilities are located on the Solbasch campus in the Brussels borough of Ixelles. In addition to its graduate and undergraduate educational functions, the ULB administers several teaching hospitals and research-oriented science parks -- plus several ULB Museums.
