Online Highways Home > Colorado > Manitou Springs "Manitou" is the Native American word for "great spirit," which is a perfect name for this town settle around more than 25 medicinal springs and historically a favorite Indian hunting ground. Situated between the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak, the town features mineral springs that are fed by the snows of the nearby peak. To date, several of these springs have been restored to their original condition and the waters are available to the public for free; people fill cups or jugs from their favorite spring. The city hosts walking tours called "springsabouts" and maps of local springs are available for tours at your own pace. The town features a variety of resort developments, an historic district, attractions, and charming homes in an art-colony atmosphere that draws year-round visitors.
